The Tailor’s Son

A tailored but effortless pizzeria and bar inspired by the owner’s father who worked as a tailor in Italy.

Being entrusted to translate a client’s nostalgia into design is an honor we do not take lightly. Of our numerous projects with prolific restaurateur Adriano Paganini, this was by far the most intimate. Adriano, whose father worked as a tailor in Milan, fondly recalled a mint-green formica cutting table that functioned at the center of all of the shop’s activities. Dining tables were custom-made to reflect this memory, juxtaposed with banquettes covered with a quirky mix of patterns and textures—a nod to a tailor’s fabrics. The bright, airy space also came with a problem to solve: an existing bar that backed directly into the dining room. To maintain flow and separation, thin, black steel barriers were erected, creating two distinct areas that function to politely deter bar patrons from crowding diners seated at low tables.

“For Tailor’s Son, we mixed the past and present. The energy that comes from layering new onto old is more dynamic than ripping everything out and starting over.”
